Bruce Shapiro has dedicated the past 30 years to exploring motion control as a medium for artistic expression. His computer controlled kinetic art pieces are permanent installations in museums in Switzerland, Germany, US, Canada, Poland and Australia, and featured at events such as Davos World Economic Forum, Heimtextil, SXSW, and Expo 2020. These massive installations have enchanted viewers around the world. The Sisyphus table is a smaller, condensed version of the very same mechanism, making it the first of its kind — a museum-quality kinetic art sculpture for any space.
On September 24, 2016, "Sisyphus — The Kinetic Art Table" was launched — the highest funded art project in Kickstarter's history. Those orders allowed us to create Sisyphus Industries. We delivered over 1,500 kinetic art tables like nothing the world had seen before.
Sisyphus Industries is a USA based company in Minneapolis, MN. From Production, to Shipping, to Customer support, our bulletproof team assemble and ship every Sisyphus by hand out of our shop - with Shapiro (now CEO) still highly involved with the development of new ways of making kinetic art not only more accessible, but beautiful.
What is Sisyphus?
Sisyphus is both a kinetic art sculpture and a beautifully designed piece of furniture. It works by magnetically pulling a steel ball through sand using a robot (the “Sisbot”). The tracks the ball leaves in the sand field create captivating, intricate, and endlessly changing patterns under a tempered glass table top. To maximize the soothing art experience, Sisyphus is built to be a very quiet machine. At average speeds, you can only hear the soft ‘crunching’ of the ball rolling over sand. Sisyphus comes in metal side tables (22” diameter) and coffee tables (36” diameter); hardwood coffee tables (3’ and 4’ diameter); and the 15" diameter Sisyphus Mini — desktop-size kinetic art decor. Sisyphus can fill the need for both high-traffic public tables and one of a kind custom showpieces.
Sisyphus Features
Unlock more kinetic customization by connecting your machine to the companion Sisyphus App (available on iOS and Android). From the app, play and load these sand designs, called “tracks”, like a music player. You can curate relaxing, meditative playlists from your phone, tablet, or computer. Additionally, you can adjust play speed, light brightness, and light color. With seven different lighting modes, you can experiment with endless color combinations (including cool and warm white) that change with the movement of the ball. Additionally, the system is equipped with a Night Mode setting allowing users to have their machine automatically turn off during set hours of the day - giving each Sisyphus user the ability to tailor the calming experience.
Sisyphus comes equipped with 30 default tracks created by the Artist and Creator - Bruce Shapiro. Once you connect your machine to Wi-Fi, you can unlock over 2,500 unique tracks. Sisyphus users can publicly upload their kinetic art designs to share with other table owners through the app. From Logos to Landscapes, Sisyphus' designs are elicit a sense of calm and awe. Designs can be created directly from the app interface - and more are being shared all the time.
Relaxing and mesmerizing, a customer states: “The product is absolutely beautiful in its design and quality and is completely spellbinding. We can’t stop watching it. You have created something truly special in the world.”
Sisyphus tables are not only serene, but sturdy. Made with quality to withstand the perils of hosting, a customer writes: “I got one of your metal coffee tables and just want to say thanks for how sturdy you built the thing. I was getting something off a high shelf and tripped and fell right on the table. I thought for sure I’d break the glass but nothing was broken on it or me. I love it for lots of other reasons too.”
Today there are over 10,000 Sisyphus all over the globe in hotels, businesses, hospitals, and more. Sisyphus Industries continues to innovate new ways to bring kinetic art into your space, and encourages users to spark their own inner artist.
